Third Grade Math Mornings!

On behalf of the STEM Committee, a team of third-grade parents is holding 3rd Grade Math Mornings!

3rd Grade Math Morning is an extracurricular, supplemental math program intended to inspire and energize students about interesting math topics. The topics we'll cover include Weights and Balances, Negative Numbers, Logic Puzzles, Roman Numerals, Angles (with Protractors!), Percents, and more! Some of the sessions during the year are Math Contests and Jeopardy-style math games. Each session typically includes a brief slide presentation on the topic, followed by worksheets with fun exercises. Parents are invited to stay and assist their child with the worksheets.

Third Graders are welcome to join us Friday mornings at 7:30am in the Cafeteria.

This year's 3rd Grade Math Morning parent team consists of Scott Uebelhart and Jeremy Gregory.   We are looking for at least one additional volunteer, so please contact Scott (scott.uebelhart@gmail.com) if interested.

Brackett Green Team Meets This Friday (10/19)!

Brackett Green Team will meet this Friday, October 19th, from 2:30-3:30pm in the Music Room. Students from all grades are welcome to attend and parents too!

Arlington Recycling Coordinator, Charlotte Milan, is our special visitor! We’ll be learning about renewable energy and what we can do at school and home to recycle and save energy.

For more information about the Brackett Green Team and Brackett GIG (Green Initiatives Group) contact Rachel Oliveri (rachelboliveri@gmail.com).

Coats for Kids Drive!

The 24th annual coat drive has begun! Cold weather is on its way: lets help needy families stay warm!

Between now and January 8, please donate your too-small or unused coats by placing them in the bins in the Brackett lobby. All sizes: baby to adult are needed. We'll deliver them to Anton's Cleaners, which cleans them free of charge and coordinates the distribution to needy local families.

*Please, donate coats that you would give a friend to wear! No sweatshirts, vests, spring coats, rips or broken zippers! Contact maya.vayner@gmail.com with questions. Thank you!!!

Election Day Bake Sale Coordinator is Needed!

Help organize volunteers to bake and sell goods on Election Day at Brackett! This is a wonderful way for our older students to participate too, either by baking or helping to run the table!

Please email Wendy Buglio (wbuglio@gmail.com) or Kari Noble (kariannenoble@gmail.com) if interested!

Volunteer Spotlight: Call for volunteers for new One School, One Book program

Let's get everyone reading! One School, One Book is a new all-school book club that will run in January, we we are currently seeking volunteers to help with planning, promotion, and execution of this fun program.  Help select a book and spread the word to teachers, parents, and students--and then help facilitate a schoolwide event where students in all grades can discuss the book, have fun, and learn from one another. Interested in getting involved? Email Whitney Scharer at wscharer@gmail.com to learn more. Thank you!

Brackett's Second Annual Culture and Creativity Night

When: Thursday, November 15, 2018

Time: 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

The Brackett Community is a wonderful mix of people. We identify ourselves in so many ways -- by language, abilities, family structure, ethnicity, and much more. This diversity of cultural identity enriches our school. Join us for an evening to celebrate the diversity of our community through “museum tables,” arts and crafts, music, STEM related activities, and a sampling of diverse cuisines from around the world!

Grandparents, older siblings, aunts/uncles are encouraged to participate too!

Please sign up HERE to host a "museum" (aka table) or a craft station. We're also looking for people to share their music and food. We'll also need hands for behind the scenes. There's a role for everyone!

Keep in mind that there are many sources of culture. You may choose to share the culture of your family's countries of origin (this can go back many generations!), but you might also teach us about another group, language or shared history that is meaningful to you.

Some examples are:

• Is one of your family members blind or deaf? Teach us Braille or Sign Language!

• Are your grandparents from a different part of the United States? Share with us the food and music of their hometown.

• Do you participate in an activity or club with its own language, clothing or music (like Break Dancing, Dungeons and Dragons or skateboarding)? Show us what you've learned about it and why you love it!

If you are interested in sharing any part of your cultural identity please do!  All are welcome!  Please contact Caitlin Sweeney (caitlin.sweeney@gmail.com) or Nicole Schwartz (nschwartz@arlington.k12.ma.us) with any questions.

Clip BOX TOPS to Earn Money for Brackett!

Box tops can be turned into your child's teacher or in the main school office. To make counting easier, please tape or glue in groups of 10 or 25 on a sheet of paper. Don't forget to check the expiration date! Grandparents can clip them, too.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Brackett Neighborhood Helpers Needed!

The Mothers Out Front group of Arlington is hosting a "Tag the Gas Leak" event October 27 & 28th. This event is organized by school district, and at the moment there is only one person signed up for the Brackett district.

The goal is to bring visibility to where the leaks are and add some pressure to the utility companies plan for fixing at least the Large Volume Leaks first (and quickly). These large leaks comprise 50% of the methane emissions.

PARENT FORUM: “Changing the Culture Around Mental Health: It’s Past Time"

October 30, 2018

Ottoson Middle School    7- 8:30pm

John Broderick, the former chief justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court, is leading a campaign to bring mental illness out of the shadows. His son's mental illness had gone undiagnosed for nearly 20 years. ”I was the parent and I didn’t see it. So he suffered for years,”  “Then we had that horrible tragedy and he went to prison. And I don’t know how he survived that.” In 2016 Justice Broderick agreed to co-chair the first statewide launch in New Hampshire of a national mental health awareness campaign called Change Direction in New Hampshire.

For the past two years, he has spoken countless times about the five most common signs of mental illness, in an effort to improve understanding and awareness of mental health.

PRESENTER: John Broderick is the Senior Director of Public Affairs at Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s R.E.A.C.T. Mental Health Awareness Campaign.  Broderick believes that “we have the ability to change the culture and the way mental health is viewed.”

Arlington's Spooky Walk!

Please join us for Spooky Walk at Menotomy Rocks Park from 6:30-8:00 pm on Saturday October 27th. (rain date Oct. 28th at the same time).

We're looking for 4th-7th graders and adult volunteers to create a "spooky station" at this year's event. Please email kelleydamoreferguson@gmail.com if you are interested or have any questions.
