Training Meeting for Incoming Volunteers- Tuesday, January 21st, 8:30am at Brackett

The Bracket Reader group is seeking additional volunteers to work with Kindergarten children who have need for additional help in reading. The role is simple: one signs up to work with a boy or girl from one of the four kindergarten classes and spends about forty minutes a week with that child on a one to one basis. We have found in the past that this little bit of extra time is beneficial to the student and lets him/her keep up with their fellow classmates. Typically by the end of the year, Kindergarten teachers can point to a measurable degree of success and the relationship with a reader/student is truly satisfying.
Volunteers can select the most appropriate day and time to work with the students.  There are several quiet areas in the school to work with your student. Reading material is supplied along with special challenging items to help youngsters achieve improved reading skills. There is a substantial library especially set up with appropriate books to be read and discussed that meet the abilities of any child. It is open every day during normal school hours and reading helpers can keep the books until they have been read and discussed.
We will begin the program early February and continue until early June of 2014. Classes will not be held whenever the school is closed for holidays or snow days.
If you would like to help, please contact Toni at Afoynes@arlington.k12.ma.us
or myself at Radioroly@aol.com
Thanks in advance for your consideration.
The children will be excited to work with you!
Robbins Farm Park
Brackett Friends,
There is a great tradition of cooperation between the Friends of Robbins Farm Park and the Brackett School community. As of last year, the last child of a FoRFP board member graduated from Brackett. We feel it is important to have the younger children of our community represented on our board through the participation of their parents. Would you like to join us and be one of those voices? The FoRFP Board meets monthly to discuss how we can improve the park and provide programming to make the park a dynamic place for our community. We raise funds to help the town in maintaining Robbins Farm Park and promote it to the community. Board members are expected to attend the monthly meetings and to participate in our events and projects. We would be proud to include new voices, your voices, in our planning and discussions.  If you have any questions, please call me or send an email to friends@robbinsfarmpark.org.
Thank you,
Christian Klein 781-641-4211

Fostering Habits of Success: Pack First for the Journey
As another semester begins, parents and teachers are awash in the swirl of escalated assignments, extra curricular activities, student assessment, digital devices and just the right fashion accessories. Have we perhaps overlooked the social and emotional components necessary for optimal student growth and wellbeing? This session will focus on the ways that both parents and teachers can assist bright children to develop habits that will lead them to becoming life long learners, effective problem solvers, capable communicators and well-adjusted, caring and contributing citizens of the world. Participants will be given opportunities to ask questions and reflect on examples drawn from both home and classroom settings as they join in a conversation about the ways to best promote the development of the skills necessary for a satisfying and productive life.
PRESENTER:  Diana Reeves is a parent, teacher of third graders at the Gordon School in East Providence, RI university instructor, education consultant, advocate for gifted children, and past recipient of the Presidential Award for Teaching Math and Science. She has served as President and Chairperson of the Massachusetts Association for Gifted Education and as a co-chair of its legislative action committee. As a Parent director on the National Association for Gifted Children board, and as the co-chair of the NAGC Parent Advisory Committee, Diana helped develop NAGC’s Mile Marker Series, received the NAGC Community Service Award 2009, and co-authored an NAGC sponsored e-book on forming G/T parent advocacy groups.  She is a SENG certified parent group facilitator, and has run many “MAGE” discussion groups.  In the last year, Diana has presented workshops at NAGC in Denver, at the “White Privilege Conference in Seattle”, the  New Teachers Conference in San Jose and the Alabama Association For Gifted State Conference in Birmingham.  At each of these sessions, the social and emotional as well as academic needs of gifted students and their parents and teachers were embedded within topics specific to differing audiences.
