PARENT FORUM 2015: “It’s A Boy”
Michael Thompson Presents - “It’s A Boy” – Understanding Male Development from Kindergarten through High School
Date/Time: Wednesday, January 28 – 7-8:30 PM
Location: Ottoson Middle School
Boys often frustrate and bewilder teachers. They can be hard to talk to, self- destructive, vulgar and under motivated academically. At times, it appears that some boys are dedicated to defeating the purpose of school. It is difficult for any teacher desiring order in the classroom not to wish, from time to time, that the boys were a bit more like the girls. But, of course, the wish is futile: boys are not girls. We need to understand boys on their own terms.
This parent forum offers participants the chance to talk about boys: their biology, their neurology and their psychology. Dr. Thompson will introduce participants to the most recent research on boy development, starting from birth and continuing through adolescence. There are now over sixty studies showing that there are significant differences between the male and female brain. Some of these findings have implications for the way we motivate, teach and discipline boys.
PRESENTER: The heart of Dr. Thompson’s work is lecturing to parents, teachers and students about the development of boys, the social lives of both boys and girls, the parent-teacher dynamic, school culture, how to raise responsible children, and the psychological journey of children through school. He and his co-author, Dan Kindlon, wrote the New York Times best-selling book, “Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys”. He is the author of “Speaking of Boys”, Answers to the Most- Asked Questions About Raising Sons and co-author of “Best Friends/Worst Enemies”: Understanding the Social worlds of children, “Mom, They’re Teasing Me:” Helping your child solve Social Problems, “The Pressured Child”: Helping your Child Achieve Success in School and in Life and “It’s A Boy”! a comprehensive guide for the parents of boys. Dr. Thompson’s new book “Homesick and Happy,” is about children’s experiences away from their parents. Michael lives in Arlington.

This is a weekly 45 minute commitment. Readers work on a one to one basis with a child who will learn the joy of reading. The time and place at the school is flexible so readers can set the optimal time to be with their student.
If you have the time and want to be part of the progress of a new reader, contact Toni Foynes, the Brackett School Reading Specialist, at Afoynes@arlington.k12.ma.us or Roly Chaput, Readers Coordinator at Radioroly@gmail.com
