Spring Box Tops Drive!
It's time to gather all those box tops you've been saving and turn them in to the Box Top drawer, which is located in the school lobby (in the top drawer next to the bookcase and water fountain). The Spring deadline is Tuesday, February 11th. If you are new to the community, Box Tops for Education offers FREE money to our school just for sending in the small pink rectangles found on products you probably use every day.
The process is simple-- clip pink Box Top labels from products (listing on website http://www.boxtops4education.com/Image.aspx?id=3878 ), bag and place them in the collection drawer in the school's front lobby. We will count them and send them into General Mills. Each Box Top is worth 10 cents. This really adds up if we all collect and submit them! Brackett uses this money for field trips and enrichment, so start clipping today!
June Fair Coordinator(s) Needed!
Looking for a way to help out with the PTO?  The Brackett June Fair is the biggest fundraiser of the year and needs a volunteer or two to help put it all together.  The June Fair coordinator(s) works closely with vendors, parent volunteers, and Brackett staff, and can easily be done from the home with the exception of the day of the fair.

If you are interested in helping out as this year's June Fair Coordinator(s) please contact Ryan Rosenstein @ ryan.heatherr@yahoo.com.
Cultural Enrichment Update
As a culmination to their study of Mexico, the first graders enjoyed an engaging presentation by Veronica Robles last Friday (January 17.) Ms. Robles is a Latin American educator and entertainer, and founder of the Veronica Robles Cultural Center.  http://www.veronicarobles.com/about.html

Her presentation wove together language lessons, story telling, music and dance (along with several costume changes!) as she took the students on a "tour" through the history and culture of Mexico. Students were invited to sing and dance and they enjoyed sharing their knowledge of Mexico and the Spanish language with her, as well.

Special thanks to the PTO for fully funding this Cultural Enrichment Program through parent donations and fundraising efforts.  Additional thanks to Mr. Schiavone for accommodating the use of the gym for this program and to Mr. Hart for helping with logistics.

Fostering Habits of Success: Pack First for the Journey
As another semester begins, parents and teachers are awash in the swirl of escalated assignments, extra curricular activities, student assessment, digital devices and just the right fashion accessories. Have we perhaps overlooked the social and emotional components necessary for optimal student growth and wellbeing? This session will focus on the ways that both parents and teachers can assist bright children to develop habits that will lead them to becoming life long learners, effective problem solvers, capable communicators and well-adjusted, caring and contributing citizens of the world. Participants will be given opportunities to ask questions and reflect on examples drawn from both home and classroom settings as they join in a conversation about the ways to best promote the development of the skills necessary for a satisfying and productive life.
PRESENTER:  Diana Reeves is a parent, teacher of third graders at the Gordon School in East Providence, RI university instructor, education consultant, advocate for gifted children, and past recipient of the Presidential Award for Teaching Math and Science. She has served as President and Chairperson of the Massachusetts Association for Gifted Education and as a co-chair of its legislative action committee. As a Parent director on the National Association for Gifted Children board, and as the co-chair of the NAGC Parent Advisory Committee, Diana helped develop NAGC’s Mile Marker Series, received the NAGC Community Service Award 2009, and co-authored an NAGC sponsored e-book on forming G/T parent  advocacy groups.  She is a SENG certified parent group facilitator, and has run many “MAGE” discussion  groups.  In the last year, Diana has presented workshops at NAGC in Denver, at the “White Privilege Conference in Seattle”,  the  New Teachers Conference in San Jose and the Alabama Association For Gifted State Conference in Birmingham.  At each of these sessions, the social and emotional as well as academic needs of gifted students and their parents and teachers were embedded within topics specific to differing audiences.

All materials are included. We hope your child will join us on our journey through language!
