LOOKING FOR PARENTS TO TAKE OVER THE ANNUAL BRACKETT BOOK FAIR!
Deborah DosSantos and I have been running the Brackett Book Fair the last several years but since our boys are both in 5th grade, this is our last year! We are looking for at least 2 parents to help take over this wonderful event. For those of you not familiar with the Book Fair, it's a fantastic week of partnering with Book Ends in Winchester where we turn the Brackett Library into a book store! The students all buy books during their library times at school and we hold a parent shopping night during that week as well. The Fair is scheduled for the week of Nov. 16th, with the shopping night scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 19. Ideally we would like parents who are interested to get involved fairly soon so that we can show them the ropes and have them help as much as possible so they have a solid foundation for taking over next year. This is a really fun event that is one of the largest fundraisers for the PTO. If you would like to learn more, please contact me at: gettoyoung@comcast.net or call me at 781-646-4841. Thanks for your interest and support! Christie Getto Young

Olympians author George O’Connor visits Brackett 4th and 5th graders
On October 19th all 4th and 5th grade students were treated to a presentation by George O’Connor, creator of the graphic novel series Olympians. George talked about how he develops his books from thumbnail sketches to “dummies” to full color books. He was funny and energetic, and the students had tons of questions for him! For more information about George’s books see http://olympiansrule.com/. This event, like all Cultural Enrichment events, was fully funded by Brackett’s PTO. Thank you to all donors! - Amy Horsburgh and Margaret Moore, Cultural Enrichment Co-chairs

PARENT FORUM: Dr. Nora Shine, “THE TALK,” Tuesday, October 27th 7-8:30 PM, Ottoson Middle School
Dr. Nora Shine, a child psychologist and parent of two young children, will present the TALK, in which she shares research-driven, realistic strategies that parents and educators can use to prevent sexual abuse of children.Based on the consistently excellent reviews from parents and educators, the TALK will change how you think about keeping kids safe, and will leave you feeling informed, empowered, and eager to use the strategies.
Recognizing the anxiety associated with this topic, The Talk is intentionally warm and engaging, so that participants can feel open to learning the strategies that work to create protective communities. You will feel empowered when you learn:
- Facts about child sexual abuse that lead to effective prevention strategies
- A framework for integrating abuse prevention into good parenting and teaching practices.
- How to recognize adult behaviors that should raise concern.
- How to calmly and confidently address concerns, without over or under reaction.
- How to increase communication with children so they feel supported and protected.

FALL BOX TOPS DRIVE - DEADLINE - OCTOBER 29th!
Every 10 Box Tops earns Brackett School $1
It's time to gather all those box tops you've been saving and turn them in to the BoxTop drawer, which is located in the school lobby (in the top drawer next to the bookcase and water fountain). The Fall deadline is Thursday, October 29th. If you are new to the community, Box Tops for Education offers FREE money to our school just for sending in the small rectangles found on products you probably use every day.
The process is simple-- clip pink Box Top labels from products (listing on website http://www.boxtops4education.com/how-box-tops-works ), tape them on to the collection sheet and place them in the collection drawer in the school's front lobby. We will count them and send them into General Mills. Each Box Top is worth 10 cents. This really adds up if we all collect and submit them! Brackett uses this money for field trips and enrichment, so start clipping today!
**Like last year- tape Box Tops to the Pumpkin collection sheet found in this link or in sets of 10 on scrap paper
Thank you!! -Kate Riley

COATS FOR KIDS
Brackett is collecting winter coats for kids (& adults). Please bring your no-longer-needed gently used winter coats to the front lobby to deposit into the collection box. They are then taken to Anton Cleaners where they are cleaned and then distributed to those in need. Please bring only winter coats (no hats, gloves, scarves, light jackets, or boots. They won't take them. Snowsuits OK), and only those that you would have your own children wear. No rips, tears, or broken zippers.
We've been one of the top donators in Arlington Schools! So please, check your closets, try them on, and send your spares to school!
