Green Team Meetings March 1st and 15th

Brackett Green Team switches to Thursdays for the next two meetings: Thursday, March 1st and Thursday, March 15th in the Art Room. We will make plans for our Green Team table and activity for STEM Night and are excited to begin work on our Trashformations project for Arlington’s Ecofest (which takes place on Saturday, March 24th). This year’s theme for Trashformations is “Ecosystem Superheroes!” All projects are displayed on the Town Hall stage during Ecofest. Come join us as we choose a superhero and create our project! For more information about the Brackett Green Team, please contact GIG (Green Initiatives Group) co-chairs Rachel Oliveri (rachelboliveri@gmail.com) and Hilary Graham (hilgraham@aol.com).

Doesn't this sound like an interesting night? Mark your calendars! It is scheduled for Friday, March 16th 2018 from 6-8 pm.
But as we said earlier we need your help! To try and make this a successful night we are looking for volunteers to help with the following:

If you are interested please signup here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090949a4ab2aa3fb6-stem
If you have any questions, please contact Yaguang Si <ygsi01@gmail.com> or Garret C. Van Dyke Jr. <gvandyke@gmail.com>
Please keep in mind this night is not possible unless we have volunteers like you and your family. Let's make this STEM Night memorable and fun for our youngsters together.

Gear up for the Read-a-thon: Coming March 12-26
Brackett’s second Read-a-Thon will run from March 12th-26th, and we hope we’ll have your support! The Read-a-thon is a wonderful opportunity to promote reading and literacy while at the same time raising money for the Brackett PTO.
The Read-a-thon is a challenge for our students: how many minutes can the Brackett community spend reading during two weeks? Each minute equals one point. The class in each grade with the most points wins a trophy and a special bonus prize. In addition, each student can earn prizes by tracking his or her reading time.
Students raise money by asking family and friends to make donations to encourage their reading. However, the donation component is optional; a student can fully participate in the Read-a-thon without collecting any donations. And if a student has difficulty reading on their own, the student can earn reading time based on the amount of time another person reads to them. In addition, picture books count for beginning readers!
Each student will receive a packet to take home. The packet will provide instructions on how to set up their individual read-a-thon page online and how to track reading time.
Stay tuned for more details!

Community Art Show and June Fair Co-Chairs Needed
Two of Brackett's most beloved and anticipated events are in need of co-chairs!
The Community Art Show is Friday, May 4th. We've got some amazing parent volunteers who have already signed up to make promotional materials, hang art, and handle most aspects of the art show. But we need two parents to oversee the volunteers. You do NOT need to have any artistic abilities just a desire to help. You can do most of the job from home, just sending emails to coordinate folks. It's a great group of people. Come be a part of it!
The June Fair is in early June and we're looking for co-chairs and a committee of parents to make this fun event a reality! Time honored games and crafts practically run themselves. We just need some parents to oversee the event. The June Fair is a highlight of the year. We promise you'll have a lot of fun, too.
Please email Catherine Fenollosa cfenollosa@gmail.com or Wendy Buglio wbuglio@gmail.com for more info or to volunteer.

Colors of STEM Exhibit Unveiled
Dear Brackett Families,
The first portrait in The Colors of STEM exhibit is unveiled! It highlights the scientific and cultural contributions of Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, a world-renowned astrophysicist and science communicator, as well as multimedia personality. He is the star of PBS’s Cosmos, National Geographic’s StarTalk, and author of Astrophysics for People in a Hurry and other bestselling titles. Be sure to see this new display on the 2nd floor across from the Brackett Library today!
Check back each month for a new portrait on The Colors of STEM billboard, and look out for books accompanying the exhibit to be available in the library soon.
Feel free to reach out to us if you have suggestions for individuals to profile, questions or would like to learn more.
Thanks,
Atwood Cheung and Nancy Chew

As previously announced in January 2018…
BRACKETT WINS AEF ‘INNOVATIONS IN EDUCATION’ GRANT FOR DIVERSITY PROJECT!
In December, the Arlington Education Foundation (AEF) awarded over $2,000 to fund a diversity exhibit at Brackett entitled ‘The Colors of STEM: Portraits of Prominent Americans of Color in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics'. The project will help promote diversity, inclusion, and tolerance among K-5 students and provide students with American role models of color who are generally underrepresented.
The AEF grant proposal was spearheaded by Brackett parents Atwood Cheung and Nancy Chew and 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Nicole Schwartz. They plan to unveil the first poster portrait in February, and a new portrait every month throughout the year.
As an AEF-funded project, the portraits created at Brackett will eventually become a rotating exhibit throughout the other APS elementary school campuses.
