A Note from the Outgoing PTO Presidents

For the past two years, it has been a pleasure and honor serving you as PTO Co-Presidents. It has been an unforgettable experience, watching our Brackett community come together for the good of our children. We have watched new faces join in our volunteer efforts generating new ideas, groups and events. Veteran Brackett families and volunteers continued to inspire us every year with their energy and talent.
We are truly thankful for the hundreds of volunteers we have had the pleasure of working with during the last two years ~ you have given so much to Brackett, often working behind the scenes ~ it would be impossible to list everyone, but please accept our warm thanks for all you have done.
The Brackett PTO is not only made up of dedicated families, but also dedicated teachers and staff. They play a crucial role in our community’s success and we are so lucky to have them!

We are fortunate to have one candidate for PTO Co-President, but we are actively searching for another PTO Co-President.  If you are interested or know someone who is interested, please contact Susan at svd418@verizon.net or Alison at acarrier00@yahoo.com
We hope to hold the election for our replacements at the upcoming PTO meeting on Wednesday, May 15th from 6:30 to 7:30 pm in the teacher's lounge.
Thank you again for all your support,
Susan and Alison

Save the Date for the June Fair on June 8th!

Celebrate spring and support the Brackett PTO at the Brackett Elementary School June Fair on Saturday, June 8th from 10am to 2pm, rain or shine.
Come and get your face painted and enjoy a refreshing slushy to go with your hot dog, pizza and cotton candy! The fair will also have arts and crafts, sports and games, an inflatable obstacle course and a dunk tank--maybe seated with a friend or neighbor of yours! Have a good time dancing to dj music playing the latest tunes or participate in a Krump session from Lynn & Jen's Dance studio in Arlington.  Both events are FREE!
Look for new spring items at our huge Indoor Yard Sale! There will be so many goods to choose from, including bikes, house wares, children clothing, games, books and sporting equipment.
The Brackett June Fair includes a Plant Sale where you will find flowers, herbs, vegetables and other assorted plants from both local farms as well as neighbor's gardens.

There will be an Electronics Recycling Drive on the day of the fair. Bring your computer monitors, copiers, air conditioners, televisions, computers, and other used electronics items – anything with a battery or a cord. The items will be recycled in a responsible manner. The fees are $10 per item (or a small box of miscellaneous items like keyboards, mice, and cables), with the exception of TVs, which are $15. Most of these items are not collected by towns for recycling, so take advantage of this unique opportunity. Everyone is welcome: spread the word to your friend, neighbor, or employer.
A Sign-Up Genius will be available soon for volunteer opportunities!

Cultural Enrichment News

Recently the Cultural Enrichment Committee sponsored events for second and fourth grade students at Brackett.  Art teachers from the Museum of Fine Arts led a hands-on Japanese ink painting workshop for second graders on April 25th.  The MFA teachers brought all the necessary materials, and our students had a great time learning by doing!  The next day, Dan Cripps, a master teacher from Native American Perspectives, visited with fourth graders inside his tipi in the gym (Thank you, Mr. Schiavone, for sharing your space with us!).  Mr. Cripps always gets our students thinking about big issues such as history, identity, and respect.  At our final event on May 23rd, all students at Brackett will attend a performance by storyteller, puppeteer, and shadow artist Leland Faulkner.  His show is magical.

This year the Cultural Enrichment Committee brought a total of eight programs to Brackett – one program for each grade and two all-school events. These programs are fully funded the Brackett PTO, which, of course, means they are fully funded by you!  Thank you. – Amy Horsburgh and Joanna Poole, Cultural Enrichment Co-Chairs

Calling all plants!
Spring is finally here and we need your unwanted plants! As you divide and conquer your home garden challenges, consider putting aside extra plants for the June Fair Plant Sale. It's easy, just dig that extra hosta or iris or azalea - put it in an expendable container/bucket  - and keep it watered and alive so you can drop it off at school for the plant sale.
Do you have an aspiring young actor? Maybe your child has always dreamed of being a Merperson? Arlington Children's Theatre still has a few spots available for this summer's production of Disney's The Little Mermaid, Jr. Sign up now and find out how much better it is "under the sea."
