New Recess Equipment

Brackett’s PTO is excited to announce that we’ve purchased recess equipment bags for every classroom!

Some of our students suggested that they’d love some new items to play with and Mr. Schiavone helped us brainstorm. Each bag contains kickballs, jump ropes, a football and scoop toss games.

We hope the students will enjoy their new equipment. And thanks to the students for their suggestion! And a big thank you to Mr. Schiavone and Ms. Hill for their support and advice.

Notes from the Health Office

As the days become warmer, lots of outdoor activities will start to happen.  Here are a few things to keep in mind while you are enjoying the outdoors:

Sun sense:  Cover up with sunscreen whenever you will be in the sun.  An SPF of 30 is good. Reapply after swimming and every few hours.  Apply sunscreen to your child before sending them to school.  Send your child to school with a small container of sunscreen that they can reapply themselves if needed.  The teachers can not apply sunscreen.  Wear hats and cover up with clothing made of Lycra.  Lycra protects your skin from the suns rays.  Stay out of the sun between the hours of 10 and 2 whenever possible.

Tick checks:  If you plan to be in wooded or high grassy areas, check carefully for ticks.  This is a two-person job.  You need to check each other’s backs as well as the front.  Don’t forget to check your scalp as well.  The ticks that carry Lyme disease are tiny, about the size of a pinhead or freckle.  If you find one on your body, pull it straight up and out with a tweezers and save it in a baggy or some sort of container. Inform your PCP.

Use bug spray:  If you are in wooded areas or out at dusk or in the evening, remember to use insect repellent.  Some mosquitoes may carry EEE virus (Eastern Equine Encephalitis), or West Nile Virus, which can cause serious health risks.

Always wear your protective gear:  If you are using anything with wheels, a helmet is a MUST.  Start now so you will be used to it even on hot days.  Don’t forget mouth guards, shin, elbow, knee and wrist equipment for many sports and activities.

Drink, Drink, Drink:  Keep hydrated especially on those very hot days.  If you plan to be doing very strenuous activities for 20 minutes or longer, a sports drink that contains sugars and salt will be helpful.  Otherwise have water handy whenever you are out for long periods of time.

Footwear for school:  Children are running and playing hard with every opportunity.  Their footwear needs to support this active play.  Footwear with backs and secure straps or laces is best for active kids to prevent accidental injuries.  We strongly discourage the wearing of flip-flops and crocks to school.

Enjoy the outdoors!!

June Fair Call for Volunteers

Dear friends of Brackett -- the annual summer fair shall soon be upon us -- soon, that is, if we get more volunteers to help! Warm thanks to those who have already volunteered (we love you all in a socially-appropriate way). If you are on Facebook, please follow our page (@BrackettJuneFair) or see our post on the Brackett PTO page; save the date (Sunday, June 10th from 11:00 – 3:00), and please volunteer -- we would like to add a bake sale this year, so volunteers to organize and staff it would be most appreciated; we would also like to continue the tradition of the Resale Shop, so volunteers are needed for that as well—not to mention our other activities! Please sign up at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0a45abad2caa8-june6. For questions, please email Ian at ipilar@bu.edu or Carol at carol1279@gmail.com.  Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you there.
