DR. NORA SHINE'S," THE TALK": Talking to Adults, Listening to Kids/ Realistic Strategies for Promoting the Sexual Safety of Young Children
Tuesday, May 12th 6-8 p.m. at the Brackett School
proudly sponsored by the Brackett PTO
Dr. Nora Shine, a Child Psychologist and parent of two young children, has created a two hour workshop in which she shares realistic strategies that parents (and teachers/counselors) can use to promote the safety of their young children, especially in regards to child sexual exploitation. Dr Shine draws upon her knowledge as a Child Psychologist, her experience as a parent, and her training as a facilitator in sexual abuse prevention from two nationally renowned organizations (D2L and StopItNow), to teach what really works to protect children from sexual abuse. Designed to reduce anxiety surrounding this topic, Dr. Shine uses an intentionally warm and light manner. With the goal of inspiring a sense of informed confidence, and a commitment to behaving responsibly, you will learn:
- Facts about child sexual abuse that inform effective prevention strategies
- A framework for integrating abuse prevention into good parenting practices
- Facts about which adult behaviors should raise concern ( and how to avoid unnecessary panic!)
- Language that adults can use to calmly and confidently address observations that raise concern
- Ways to increase communication with children, so they feel supported and protected by adults
- Begin to overcome our own embarrassment and hesitation about all things sexual, so that we are able to
protect children from those who would exploit our discomfort

Mark your calendars! Teacher Appreciation Luncheon is Monday, May 18th from 1:00-2:00pm!
Once again, the PTO will be sponsoring a lunch and parent volunteers will be covering the classrooms so all of the teachers and staff can enjoy lunch together. The luncheon will be held on Monday, May 18th from 1:00-2:00pm. Volunteers will be setting up in the cafeteria after the students are finished with lunch.
In order to pull off this event we will need classroom coverage for each class from 1:00-2:00pm. We will need at least 3 parent volunteers for each classroom on Monday, May 18th from 12:50-2:00pm. Teachers will return to their classrooms to dismiss the students at the end of the day. There will be no specialists from 1-2pm, so all students will be in their classrooms.
If we receive many interested parents and the slots fill up, please let us know if you are willing to help out in other classrooms if needed. Volunteers will check in with the teachers for specifics. Last year, many volunteers did a project, made an appreciation card for the teacher, played outside on the playground or were given instructions from their teachers.
We know that the teachers/staff really enjoy having an hour to eat together since they don't normally overlap their lunchtimes as a group. It is a great gift to give our Brackett staff during Teacher Appreciation Week!

We are also asking for contributions of dessert, beverage, supplies and decorations for this luncheon, so if there are parents who cannot help out during the classroom time and want to volunteer, there are other opportunities to help with the luncheon. The PTO has generously offered to cover the cost of catering the food!
